Data Agents in Microsoft Fabric
Data Agents in Microsoft Fabric

We’ve recently been experimenting with Microsoft Fabric Data Agents, and the results are promising for organisations looking to democratise access to real-time data.

With the Fabric Data Agent, your team can ask natural language questions about data stored in Fabric Eventhouse, KQL databases, and OneLake — and receive accurate, contextual answers, instantly. This opens up powerful analytics capabilities to business users without requiring deep technical expertise or knowledge of the underlying data structures.

What We Built

In this pilot, we ingested IoT telemetry data into a Fabric Eventhouse KQL database using Fabric EventStream. We then configured the Fabric Data Agent to read from the KQL DB, tested its responses, and published the experience.

Within a short space of time, non-technical business users were able to query the KQL datahouse using plain English and receive real-time insights on device and sensor data.

Tech Stack Overview

  • Fabric EventStream – Ingest, transform, and route real-time event data.

  • Fabric Eventhouse (KQL DB) – Store structured real-time data from EventStream.

  • OneLake – Unified data storage layer across workloads.

  • Fabric Data Agent – Build conversational interfaces for your data.

  • KQL Queryset – Define and execute rich queries and views across data sources.

  • Fabric Real-Time Board – Monitor real-time processing performance.

  • Power BI + Data Activator – Enable visualisation, alerts and automation.

Business Benefits

  • Ask Questions in Natural Language

Anyone can ask real-time business questions without technical skills.

  • Customisable Conversations

Tune the agent to your business context and end-user needs.

  • Flexible Data Integration

Bring in Lakehouses, semantic models, or Power BI datasets for richer insights.

  • Business Questions = Business Answers

Get meaningful answers grounded in your operational data.

  • AI-Powered Integration

Embed the Fabric Data Agent within Azure AI Agent or Azure AI Studio/Foundry for broader enterprise automation.

This is a powerful step toward self-service analytics in real-time environments. If you’d like to see how Microsoft Fabric can empower your teams with conversational analytics, reach out — we’re always happy to share insights or collaborate on proofs of concept.
